The Santa Cruz Derby Girls All-Stars, the Boardwalk Bombshells, routed Bay Area Derby’s Berkeley Resistance 332-92 on Saturday at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
Pumped up by the latest release of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association international rankings, placing Santa Cruz up nine spots to No. 15, the Bombshells tyrannized the Resistance jammers with their crushing defense. Bombshell jammers took advantage of power jams, driving up the score quickly to a 100 point lead only 20 minutes into the game.
“Despite the score differential, Bay Area Derby always gives us a good game,” said Krista “Skirt Vonna-gut” Corwin, who was awarded MVP jammer at the end of the night. “And the fans really turned out for us tonight. Hearing our fans cheering for us kept the good vibes going the whole game through.”
Berkeley came back at halftime with renewed energy and gained momentum when the Santa Cruz jammer was sent to the penalty box. However, the Bombshells took command within minutes, showcasing strong blocker tripods and effective offensive plays to end the night with an impressive 333-92 win.
“We tried out some new strategies to get ready for our next tournament,” Corwin said. “It felt really good to nail them down. We’re feeling confident going forward into our next games.”
The Bombshells upcoming bouts for rankings will be next month in Oakland, versus two closely ranked teams: the No. 16 Atlanta Rollergirls and No. 17 Minnesota Roller Girls. These are the last games before final WFTDA rankings are released to determine playoff seeding. Of the top 28 ranked teams, the top ten teams after playoff tournaments will move on to the WFTDA Championship tournament.
