Santa Cruz Derby Girls - January 20, 2010
During our competition season, March through October, SCDG features a local non-profit organization at each of our home games. This organization receives a portion of the proceeds from the event as well as promotion from the league at and surrounding the date of the game. Community service is a firmly held belief within SCDG, and our Community First Committee not only talks-the-talk, but walks-the-walk, helping league members find ways to donate time as well as money. Volunteer opportunities are a big part of what we do here in derby land.
Some local non-profits that we have partnered with in past the include Planned Parenthood, GAINS, Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Hope Services, SPIN, Walnut Avenue Women’s Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz.
The 2010 Featured Non-Profit Application can be found on the Santa Cruz Derby Girls website, here.
It is easy to fill out and can be submitted online. We encourage all interested local organizations to look into this opportunity with SCDG. Application deadline is January 31, 2010. Criteria for selection includes community empowerment, focus on local organizations and issues, and volunteer possibilities.
Our Community First Committee’s Mission Statement – "Santa Cruz Derby Girls and their members are dedicated to community involvement by joining forces with local organizations to provide volunteer support and help strengthen our bond with the Santa Cruz Community. The Community First Committee facilitates, organizes, and directs the league in the support of our community."

Look forward to a full season of Jr. Derby starting February 2010. The summer 2009 program was such a success that a full season-length program will begin in February, with expanded membership. Expect to see more exhibition bouts at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, with our own Bumper Scars and Sugar Skulls battling each other and an occasional visiting Jr. Derby league. Strikes and Spares and Gutterballs, Oh My!
The Inaugural SCDG Turkey Bowl held November 25th, sponsored by the Boardwalk Bowl, was officially a huge hit with bowlers and spectators alike. Many thanks to all who came out to participate and to cheer on the bowlers. Rumor has it this will be an annual event. Trophies were handed out for the three highest scoring teams, highest single scores by a girl and a guy, and of course the Turkey Trophy for the lowest score of the night. Names are being withheld to protect the guilty and the innocent. See our web site for details, www.santacruzderbygirls.org. The fundraiser benefits the 2010 SCDG Travel Fund. Look for more fun events during our off-season!
Holiday Cheer…
The Santa Cruz Derby Girls wish everyone in our community a safe, healthy and happy holiday season. We’ve been lucky to participate as a group in the Downtown Holiday Parade, sponsored by the Downtown Association. We are also excited to be adopting two families again this season through the Valley Churches United Missions Adopt A Family program. We’re grateful to be in a position to be helpful, and encourage others to do what they can, if they can.
