Santa Cruz Derby Girls - January 20, 2010

The Santa Cruz Derby Girls have achieved another longstanding goal - being invited to join the WFTDA Apprentice Program. The WFTDA (the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) sets standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determines guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. Additionally, the WFTDA holds annual regional and national tournaments, sanctions teams and bouts, ranks all member leagues, and molds the future of roller derby. (Essentially, the WFTDA could be considered the NBA of roller derby.)
WFTDA Apprentice Logo
The WFTDA Apprentice Program was established in 2009. The Program has matched SCDG with an established WFTDA mentor league, who will guide us through the processes and requirements necessary to becoming a full member. This is an important step to competing in the WFTDA West Region for regional and national rankings.

What does this mean for the league?

It means all of our hard work is paying off! And, of course even harder work lies ahead. We can look forward to increasing our skill level during training, facing challenging competition on the track, and traveling to represent our hometown in the West Region, which currently has twenty-three member leagues (bordered on the east by Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico), and on a national level.

What does it mean for our sponsors?

We’ll be spreading the good word even further, and bringing their name with us whenever we can, and we’ll be broadening our network of sponsors as our needs grow.

What does it mean for our fans?

First of all it means your little girls are growing up, which is always exciting. It also means that the sport we’ve all fallen in love with is growing – which is even more exciting! There will be more opportunities for your friends and family in other parts of the country to see what all the hype is about. Our home season will remain the same, and there will be more away games for our fans to attend as well.

Why is this such a big deal? Really, is it all that and a bag of chips?

Yes, it is a big deal. Yes, including the bag of chips. The sport of roller derby is growing in huge numbers, and being invited to join the official governing and ranking body is important to our league, and to our community. Believe it!
